Strange causes of death in Marysville Cemetery. There is no shortage of them.

This entry is a compilation of strange methods of death including odd illnesses, murders, suicides, executions, and strange accidents within cemetery records.

10,000 approximate souls are said to be buried within the The Historical Marysville City Cemetery. This list of 338 will paint a picture of how truly tragic living was then.

Methods of death can speak volumes about the way of life within an era.

While some of these causes of death, like death via "Child Birth" may seem common, it shows the true barbaric nature of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Information in death records, can give us a window into what life was like back then.

For example, where people originated from tells us how far people were willing to travel, in the search for something better. Many of these efforts seem futile after reading how young they died. Imagine traveling for months and even years, only to arrive at your destination in such bad shape, that you were too sick to see the fruits of your labor?

The age they died in conjunction with how they died, tells you a lot as well. What was considered an adult then vs. now is quite contrasting. Those we view as children now, died in accidents while working.

The endless deaths caused by the excessive use of drugs and alcohol may attribute to the declining emotion and mental status of people.

The numerous drownings show the call of the Feather and Yuba Rivers has proven deadly for centuries.

From horses, to railway, to automobiles; you will see how transportation evolved, through others methods of death.

The sheer fact that these scenarios are frequent in cemetery records, are a testament that this is just how life was, for all.

This list does not pay attribute to the thousands listed for illnesses such as; cancers, tumors, consumption, typhoid fever, pneumonia, uremia, pulmonary issues, malaria, dysentery, hemorrhages, cholera, tuberculosis, congestion, still births, inflamed brains and bowels, diphtheria, dropsy, pleurisy, scarlet fever, spotted fever, measles, or the slough of other illnesses that plagued the people of our area.

Marysville and the surrounding areas were an especially difficult territory to live in. Many came here extremely ill after having survived the journey west-ward. Once they got here, people had to fight to survive. Robbery, murder, and suicide were a reality, and an everyday occurrence here in the west.

Some causes of death are just a mystery to think about.

Ebenezer Hamilton, Marysville Sexton & Coroner

Cemetery records show that our little county of Yuba was no stranger to tragedy and loss. Some of these post mortem diagnoses may seem strange, but they were indeed a reality. Ignorance to many conditions and the lack of medical technology contribute to most of this. Through the periods of approximately 1850-1870, we had one Coroner/Sexton for the area. That was Ebenezer Hamilton. It must have been a truly arduous job keeping track of the never ending demand for the one who tended to the dead.
