"FAKE" DOCTOR WHO ROBBED HIS PATIENTS
FRANCISCO TOPETI, a "fake" doctor, in the City prison owing to the detective ability displayed by Judge Treadwill who is one of his victims. Topeti will have two charges of grand larceny registered against him this morning.
"Dr." Topeti has been attending the Judge for nervousness and succeeded in winning the Judge's confidence. The Judge met Topeti Wednesday and they shook hands. In doing so Topeti's cuff was exposed, and there was something familiar to the Judge in the diamond cuff button. After parting from Topeti the Judge hurried home and discovered that his diamond cuff buttons and gold watch were missing, and he immediately notified the police of his suspicions.
Mrs. Coughlin, 734 Montgomery street, was also a patient of Topeti, and she had reported to the police that within the past three weeks someone had stolen from her piano, where the had them hidden, a hunting-case gold watch, neck chain and locket, a diamond pin, a ring set with rubies and diamonds, four pairs of silver bracelets and a gold brooch let with garnets. Detectives Wren and McMahon had been detailed on the case, and they concluded that Topeti was the thief. They arrested him yesterday afternoon, and Marched at the City Prison pawn - for the articles stolen from Mrs. Coughlin were found in his pockets. No trace has yet been found of the Judge's diamond cuff buttons and gold watch.
Topeti has a record. August 2. 1897, he was sentenced in San Diego to two and a half years In San Quentins on a charge of bigamy, and was released in August last.
