John Holland, Who Beat Josie St. Clair to Death in Marysville, Is Given Twenty-Five Years in Folsom

MARYSVILLE, June 25.—John Holland, the young man who- beat a woman named Josie St. Clair with a bar of iron last April, inflicting Injuries from which she died ten days later, was sentenced this morning by Judge McDaniel to serve twenty-five years in the state at Folsom. The sentence is a surprise in consideration of the fact that the Jury rendered a verdict of murder in the second degree without recommendation. It was stated after the verdict was brought in that mo.st of the jurors were for murder In the first degree, and finally gave in to the others, who were in favor of a second-degree verdict. If Holland gets full credits his sentence will be reduced to fifteen years and three months."
